A race against antipersonnel mines

Saturday, November 28 2009

For the first time in the walled city’s history, over five thousand people will leave their mark for a mine-free world in the ‘Cartagena 5K’ circuit. This sporting event is part of a series of activities framed within the context of the ‘Second Review Conference of the Mine Ban Convention’, to be held in that city from November 29th to December 4th.

At 9 in the morning Vice-President Francisco Santos Calderón will welcome and start off the race for athletes in the category of people with disabilities in Plaza de la Aduana.

Kerry Brinkert, Director of the Convention’s Implementation Support Unit (ISU), said that the ‘Cartagena 5K’ race is an excellent opportunity for the Cartagena Summit’s guests and delegates to spend some time with the community that has welcomed them so warmly. It is also an opportunity for the people of Cartagena to feel like they are part of such an important international event that is taking place in this beautiful city”

A white-coloured human river will take over the old city’s main streets, with the participation of antipersonnel mine survivors, people with disabilities, delegates from the international community, national authorities, members of civil society organizations working on the matter and over five thousand people among tourists and Cartagena’s community.

The Vice-President of Colombia, Francisco Santos Calderón, will be present at the start and finish line, together with Andrés Dávila Ladrón de Guevara, Director of the Presidential Program for Mine Action (Paicma); members of Unicef and the United Nations Mine Action Service (Unmas); and María Victoria García Borrero, wife to the Vice-President of Colombia.

The Cartagena 5K has the support of UNMAS and UNICEF.
