Cartagena de Indias

Tuesday, August 11 2009

Cartagena de IndiasCartagena de Indias has a privileged location in the Colombian Caribbean coast, thus becoming an important international, sea and air port.

Cartagena de Indias is an incomparable city, seeing as no other Caribbean city offers as much as it does to their visitors. The dazzling splendor of the city’s military architecture makes it the most important work of its kind in America.

The city also reunites its Spanish architecture from the times of the colony in a fascinating way with its beautiful beaches, the paradise-like Rosario Islands and the charming encounters in the quaint bars and cafes located in its beautiful squares.

A city like Cartagena de Indias, where its history and monuments were significant arguments to declare it a World Heritage Site, nowadays offers a special appeal to those who wish to hold any sort of significant event or congress, supported by a top of the line hotel capacity. Cartagena de Indias is a beautiful, hospitable and kind city that opens its doors to visitors, making it a unique destination.

Cartagena feeds on the most diverse human expressions throughout the year, such as culture and its festivals, as well as congresses and several events of great importance in the political, scientific and cultural field.

Close to five hundred years have gone since the Spaniards arrived at Cartagena’s bay, and several stories and legends have developed since then. The Kalamari were the indigenous people who ruled the beaches, islands and channels until 1533, when Pedro de Heredia founded de city after a relatively peaceful conquest. Few years went by before Cartagena de Indias became the privileged place for commerce between the New World and Europe, as well as a mandatory stop for the treasures destined for the Spanish Crown. The smell of gold triggered attacks and sieges against the city. Cote, Hawkins, Vernon and Drake were some of the most famous characters who starred in the episodes, battles and scuffles that kept the city bouncing back and forward between glory and misfortune for over 200 years.

Cartagena de IndiasIn order to stop such sacking, Philip II ordered the construction of a fortified system of forts and castles built as the main military pieces of architecture in the colony in America. Paradoxically, this building was used by the native and Creole population in 1811 after the declaration of independence to defend their freedom from the re-conquest armies sent by Fernando VII, acquiring, from that point onward, the title of Heroic City.

Cartagena de Indias offers important historical sites to visitors such as the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, the Convento de la Popa, the Palacio de la Inquisición, as well as visits to the Naval Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the Gold Museum. Beaches in Bocagrande, Marbella, la Boquilla, Bocachica, Barú or leisure activities such as scuba diving and resting at the Rosario Island or night activities such as pubs and cafes in squares and narrow streets, casinos and shows.

As every other touristic and commercial city that welcomes large numbers of visitors from different places, Cartagena de Indias has a very complete hotel system. Over 30 hotels with  5, 4 and 3 star services, sea front or in the historical centre, with Caribbean, colonial or modern architecture, small and cozy hotels and inns in colonial houses are part of an offer that during the different year’s seasons welcome thousands of people who say goodbye but always come back.
