Antipersonnel mine victims join the “human race”

Friday, October 23 2009

For the second year in a row the Vice-Presidency of the Republic, through the Presidential Program for Mine Action (Paicma), has joined the “Nike Human Race 10 K” to be held on October 24th next.

One of the + Sports – Mines made by 11 antipersonnel mine victims, 7 military men and 4 civilians, will run for 5 km in order to demonstrate that an accident changes your life but does not end it, and that rehabilitation and social integration are perfectly possible when people and entities such as Nike Colombia are willing to open spaces such as this.

The Paicma Director, Andrés Dávila Ladrón de Guevara will go with the + Sports – Mines team during their entire route, which starts at Calle 100 con Carrera 35 at 6:00 p.m. and ends at the small square of Carrera 15 con Calle 85 at the north of Bogota.

The race is held simultaneously in several cities in the world such as Bogota, New York, London, Buenos Aires, Seoul and Tokyo, among other. It is the first nocturnal race ever made in the city and the runners will carry a lantern to help them light their way.

Saturday’s race is the prelude to the Cartagena 5K race, to be held on the 29th November at 7 in the morning, within the framework of the Second Review Conference of the Mine Ban Convention, and with the participation of people with disabilities, and delegates from the international community as well as the community of Cartagena. During the Second Review Conference, 156 State Parties will review the progress and challenges in issues related to mine action.
